+ In and around Strahan
Leave the car at your door and explore these must do’s by foot:
• Take a leisurely stroll around the historic foreshore walk, taking in the historic information pillars along the way. The walk commences at West Strahan Beach - a safe-for-swimming, sandy beach in town - and finishes at Regatta Point Station. It is a level, paved walk and passes Risby Cove’s entrance.
• Walk to Strahan’s main wharf and cruise boat terminals to embark on an unforgettable boat cruise taking in Macquarie Harbour, the iconic Gordon River, Hells Gates and Sarah Island. Two companies host these cruises, Gordon River Cruises and World Heritage Cruises.
• Also on the main wharf, you will find West Coast Yacht Charters’ yacht, ‘Stormbreaker’. Exploring further up the Gordon River than any other commercial boat, Owner/Skipper Trevor offers overnight tours and tailored experiences for a maximum of 10 people.
• The dramatic and hilarious true story about the last great escape from Sarah Island unfolds nightly in Australia’s longest running live play, The Ship That Never Was, at the Richard Davey Amphitheatre next to the West Coast Visitor Information Centre. See our ‘Stay and Play’ package.
• In the opposite direction, a 1.2km stroll will take you to Regatta Point Station, where you can climb aboard a majestic heritage train and step back in history on a West Coast Wilderness Railway rainforest journey.
• Just 100m from your door through the historic ‘Peoples Park’ gates, you’ll find the start of the Hogarth Falls walk, a gentle stream-side walk under a canopy of towering gums, leatherwood, sassafras and myrtle. 45-50 minutes return.
+ A short drive by car
• Ocean Beach is a 40km stretch of beach between Macquarie Heads and Trial Harbour with the freshest of air, wild waves and West Coast sunsets. Find it 6km west of Strahan.
• Ocean Beach Trail is a 2km (4km return) shared trail ideal for walking, cycling or horse riding through dunes to the beach. Access is from Ocean Beach Road.
• From Macquarie Heads, located 15km (30 minutes) from Strahan, you can see the treacherous entrance to the harbour, Hells Gates, as well as Bonnet and Entrance Islands with their historic lighthouses.
• Henty Dunes, a series of giant dunes formed by the Roaring Forties are great to explore. The dunes are around 30m high, reaching several kilometres inland and extending 15 km along the coast. You’ll find them 14km north of Strahan.
• West Coast sunsets can be stunning at Risby Cove, but if you’d prefer a bird’s eye view, head up Esk Street from Anzac Park to the Water Tower Lookout.
